you'd have this epic space battle and the whole thing would look like you had the TV muted... hahaha you'd be pressing the mute button over and over going "WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH THIS THING?!' and then someone would start talking and you'd be like... "Well, it's working now... grr" and then rewind do it all over again

Sound is a vibration in a medium, be it solid, liquid or gas. If you put your ear on one end of a metal rod and get someone to tap their keys against the other end, you will hear the sound because the keys make the rod vibrate, and this vibration is carried through the rod to your ear. In liquid, such as water, the same principle occurs, and the same again with gas, such as air.

However, the material the sound waves (the vibrations) are travelling through can affect the sound quality. That's why everything is muffled and "bloompy" when you hear it underwater. try it in the bath at home.

But sound does require some sort of matter for the waves to travel through. In space, there is no air or any other type of matter. (true, space is not completely empty. There is a very thin gas, but this gas is so thin there are only about ten atoms in every cubic centimeter. This is so thin as to be non-existant for all practical purposes, because when one atom vibrates, the nearest atom is still too far away to be vibrated by it, so the sound waves can't travel.) So why do the ships make whooshing sounds? In the book "The Making of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", they say it's because they have very sensitive microphones. And I believe them.

Okay, I'll stop rambling now.
