I had actually read that part and even commented on it in my post.

The effects of keeping him alive? What, like how much it would cost to keep him there? I'd imagine a bit more then the average terrorist?

Thank you for addressing that part of my post, but you failed to raise the true problems I think would be accompanied by keeping him alive. First, who gets to hold him. I'm sure that we do, but I doubt the entire world would agree. Other countries would probably want their hands on him, and for him to be put to death, how would we deal with that? Then, there is the morale of terrorists being maintained because they know their key leader is alive. Next, there is the weakness that would be perceived by many terrorist muslims because the United States would be seen as weak for not executing him. And yes, then their is the fact of are my tax dollars going to support keeping Osama bin Laden alive. Finally, there is that crazy idea that some terrorist might attempt some way of getting him out.

Kind of a pointless discussion here. We still have to catch the guy first.

Also, while I don't think he should be executed as that would make him a martyr and I'm against the death penalty as well, he will be executed if we ever get him. The way majority of Americans are? 'An eye for an eye'. Almost every American is going to call for his blood. And, why not? He orchestrated an attack that killed 3000 Americans. I just wish that we could rise above capital punishment like nearly every other civilized nation has done.

Because we as a nation fail to recognize the intrinsic dignity of every (no exclusions) single human person, no matter how lowly. I agree that except for almost non-existent rare cases like this, there is no true need for capital punishment in the world we live in today.

Probably the U.S., like you suggested.

I'm sure that we do, but I doubt the entire world would agree.

We probably have the greatest claim to him, as we're the instigators of this war. We lost the most troops and a lot of civilians to that psycho.

Other countries would probably want their hands on him, and for him to be put to death, how would we deal with that?

If we're politically pressured to kill him, then they must suffer the consequances. If terrorist attacks increase, then they can not complain and blame Bush and the Republicans.

Then, there is the morale of terrorists being maintained because they know their key leader is alive.

There is also the morale of them believing he is at the right hand of God and leading them into battle. That because of his blessings, they're even closer to winning. The problem is it's a double edged sword. For both of the reasons we stated. He lives or dies, either way, we lost. The only thing we can hope is that the terrorist cell isn't as powerful as many claim and it falls without his leadership. Unfortunately, these people have proven they always have another leader ready to replace the fallen.

Next, there is the weakness that would be perceived by many terrorist muslims because the United States would be seen as weak for not executing him.

Death means nothing to them. They don't really fear it like another soldier would. The death of Stalin might have shaken up the USSR, but the death of bin Laden will actually make them happy as he is a "martyr".

And yes, then their is the fact of are my tax dollars going to support keeping Osama bin Laden alive.

Your tax dollars are going to support the current terrorists we have. Does that bother you as well? (serious question.)

Finally, there is that crazy idea that some terrorist might attempt some way of getting him out.

Yeah, but as I said, it's doubtful that they'd succeed. Our military would never allow it.

Doesn't it cost like over ten fold more or something ridiculous for a execution compared to a life sentence inprisionment.

I think if they caught him, it would be foolish to reveal that fact and the location of where he would be held.

A more sensible option would be to hold him in a secure location indefinitly for questioning and extracting information, somehow, in order to bring the war on terror to an end? I think a lot of people have sidetracked from what the real goal should be. All I ever hear is Iraq this, Iraq that, Bush this, Bush that.

As for my opinion of to execute or not?? Well one would say he deserves the worst punishment avaliable (death penalty), but I think a captured OBL would be much more valuable alive. I think he deserves the worst avaliable punishment, but at the same time I personally think the death penalty is not a very severe level of punishment. Most of these people have no regard for their own lives you all know (eg the hijackers).
