Yar was a weak character and I cared little for the character. I believe, even with time, she still wouldn't have been a good character. Her death scene was also weak.
I'm glad her character kicked the bucket. It made room for Worf, a far better character, to take her job.

that's not necessarily true.
i was watching the DVD special features after i finished season one of TNG, and one of the topics discussed during the character bios was Lt. Yar's death.
it sounded like Denise Crosby was unhappy with the limited role she had on the show. because of this, she was the one who made the decision to leave TNG in pursuit of other roles which could offer more opportunities for her to grow as an actor.
yes, it was a career move, and a selfish one at that. but i think any serious actor would have made the same decision if they found themselves being underutilized. the only reason to stay is for the money/job security, but definitely not career growth.
if you compare Lt. Yar's character to that of Geordi La Forge, Deanna Troi, Wesley Crusher, either Doctors, Data, and other regular characters, she really had the least compelling role on the show, with the exception of transporter Chief O'Brien. and that's not necessarily the fault of the actor. if the writers don't know what to do with you, there's not much you can do. she just didn't have much to work with.
personally, i have more respect for her as an actor because of that decision--even though it may have ultimately been the wrong one. it's better to aim for the stars and fail than to succeed in mediocrity.

Yes. In terms of manliness, Worf has nothing on Tasha Yar.

yeah it did seem a bit random (in more than one episode) and I found myself not caring at all.. it just didn't seem to 'fit', I kinda didn't want to have to care about her problems
I was really glad to see her go, and I find it amusing how 'badly' she ended up dying, and that tar-man lol!

I don't think she should have died. She should have just got reassigned. It would be much easier and less painful for those who liked Natasha Yar.

I'm glad she left the show. Her character was not strong for the story at all... Plus Worf makes a much better Cheif of Security!

I hated Tasha Yar. I was glad when they took her out.
They could have done it more professionally, I'm sure. I mean, really. A black blob touched her and she died. Pathetic, eh?
But yeah, I was glad when she died.

Then you say "Peace and Long Life".
It's the way of life.
Don't deny it.

I liked the Tasha character and saw lots of room for development. Sad to say Denise Crosby was not happy with her airtime and wanted out. The choice to kill off her character actually came from Gene Roddenberry who wanted to show that exploring space had its dangers and sometimes death had no good reason. Sometimes thems just the breaks. Crosby could have come back if she wanted to, in that same episode that created the foundation for Sela her half Romulan daughter "Yesterday's Enterprise." Yar could've easily transferred to Enterprise-D as Acting captain wanted her to. Then we would've had Tasha Yar back, fulltime. But it all comes down to the wishes of the actor. Crosby certainly ramped up her airtime on a pop icon TV show by only making guest appearances, and for an actor that's the goal, to be seen. So Tasha Yar just wasn't meant to but she is certainly well-remembered in her brief role all those years ago. And because she bowed out, Michael Dorn got his big break, and Worf came to the forefront of Trek and transcended two series and a movie. I think things turned out ok in the end, and we're not even on Star Trek.

Tasha's character was decent, but they really didn't need her in that position. Worf going forward as the security officer brought a lot of great Klingon history into the picture. I'm a bit biased, but they should have killed her off in a better way, like with a Bat'leth fight or something. She had a fight scene early in season one on that ridiculous planet. The blood was terrible looking and the hologram was very annoying (she planned to die earlier in the year, and knew which order the crew would be standing in? And the main cast is her only friends???). She was always exciting as a Romulan though. Pick one of these to kill her http://klingonweapons.com/blog/2009/11/which-batleth-is-right-for-you/...lol

A crappy and very anti-climactic way to die, but she needed to go. Her character just wasn't working out. Worf took her place and Geordi moved to engineering. That was the best thing for the series. Although, sleeping with Data must have given her something to write about in her diary.
