The British political parties cannot really be closely compared to the American ones. There are too many different dimensions which both exist on.
Fiscal poilicy, International policy, Social policy, ect...
International policy would be all that someone should look for in a candidate for another country. And Blair is, regarding intenational policy, more like a U.S. republican.
He may be slightly liberal in England, but at least he's a Liberal Hawk.
