I'd say it's most likely that your personality and life experience dictate your taste in music. I've seen my musical preferences change over the years, sometimes because of my personality at the time, more often because of exposure to new ideas, people, and musical styles.

I would have to say that I think it definitely changes your moods. For example, if you are listening to the radio and all of a sudden a sad song comes on, you'll start thinking about your sad times and break ups. I think it has a bigger impact than we realize.
