Wed Jul 06, 2005 11:27 pm 1'st season boring? |
|
After watching Next Generation from episode one to final episode 178 3 or 4 times I have come to think that the frist season was very boring it seamed to much like a wanna be Trek. Their stories were to bland and to to broad. The episodes were either lame or to similar to the original series.

Ya, this may be so. But you must also take into consideration that:
1 this was the first series in like 20 years (I think, I'm not sure on the number)
2 The actors also have to build up, get used to, and think like their characters. Not an easy process.
So, all in all, it wasn't as bad as some might think.

It was interesting in some ways, but there wasnt anything huge like a war going on. It did seem a little dull but as Voyager2004 stated, the characters all had to start from somewhere. It was a slow process to making the crew that was on Star Trek Nemesis. The sad thing is that Tasha Yars death was the most dramatic part of the entire season

Every first season is boring. But with that the characters are able to grow, and then the writers can write cooler episodes and make more interesting things happen.
Be Patient little one.

I did think the first season of TNG was boring. I could say the same about a lot of modern shows too. Producers and actors of modern shows often say "But we're finding our feet and that'll take time". No disrespect, but I find that nonsense.
The first Star Trek series didn't have the luxury of "finding it's feet". It had to get going THERE AND THEN. Ditto a modern series like Airwolf or Knight Rider or JAG - they had to make an impact right from the get-go.
Looking at TNG now, the first season cannot help but show it's age, although I still think TNG is one of the best modern sci-fi shows. One thing I do remember from the time is how disappointed I was that "The Naked Now" from TNG Season 1 was an imitation of "The Naked Time" from the Original Series. At the time I thought, "Come on, guys, you're supposed to be the Next Gen, let's see some new plots."

I like the first season of TNG. We get to see the begining of So much i would say that out of season 1 TNG, DS9 & Voyager i would have to say that Season 1 TNG was the best. There were slight bits of comedy, we see how Geordi earned his place as chief engineer. We see Tasha Ya and her death we see how Picard absolutly hates kids and banns Wesley from the bridge and then makes him an acting ensign because of what the "Traveler" told him. We see how Picard likes crusher but wont do anything and then when an old flame of Picards comes back Beverly get jelouse and says how she cant compete with her! We see new species we learn a bit more about klingons from worf, we see Deanna & Rikers friendship begin to build up again and the begining of Datas quest to become more human.
Excellent, probably one of the best first seasons of a show. Plus this was all done in 1987 and back then because of lack of technology sci-fi was extremly poor and cheesy at that time but TNG pulled it of excellently.

I didn't like the first season of TNG, simply because it bored me to deaf. Needed more interestin episodes. But I like the later on seasons without a doubt.

You must not have done any type of acting in High school or anything. It's hard and difficult to create a character from scratch. You have to create their entire life. How they were treated as children, how they were raised, how each and every little thing in their life affected them why each and every little thing makes them act the way they do.
It's very difficult.
But people also can't say, "People who do one movie don't have the luxury of character development." or anything of that sort. Movies take like 2 years to produce, I think... But either way, they still have a lot of time to develop a character and act like that person would.
I'm not trying to belittle you, but it's just a lot harder than a lot of people give actors credit for.

The first season of The Next Generation is a bit boring compared to the later season. Even season two might be boring. It's only from the third season and onward that the show really started to get viewers.
Also, the first season's storylines were a lot like The Original Series.

Well, unfortunately we can't do anything about how similar the first season's story lines were to TOS storylines. I'm not defending those. Don't care enought to. LOL. But I'm defending the actors. As most people can tell, the actors were still fitting into their character well into the 2nd season. My dad was the one who pointed that out to me. I thought they did reasonably well the 2nd season then noticed that they were still getting comfortable.

Are you kidding? I was terrible at drama. I felt sorry for anyone who was paired up with me in drama class.

LOL. I never took a drama class. I was too busy being a band nerd for 4 years. I was in a play my sophomore year, the One Act Play contest my junior year (minor role)(we were really good), and One Act Play contest my senior year (Lead role.) We had an awesome drama teacher my senior year. she really helped me and trusted me with the lead role and with the help of the rest of the cast, we all rocked!!!

I've wondered whether to join a drama class. Why? One word - FUN. I could never be an actor of any kind. But I saw an ad for a drama class recently, and wondered if it might be a bit of fun, something to help me forget my miserable job.

I think nearly all 178 eps are boring, Though yes, season one does stand out.

Thanx 4 du replyz! I just thought that the first season semed to cheesy, you may tell me otherwise but I think TOS first season was a great deal better at leats they were original! Also I have never seen any security officer in Star Trek act so corny as Tasha Yar, shes always yelling and always acting stupid uh wut should I do captain? Also Next Generation semed to always be doing repeat episodes, atleats DS9 could be a little more new and fresh.

The first season was great, the character building of every show starts that way!Voyager was a bit boring to start with too.DS9 was slow for the first 3 seasons, but warmed up with the war/worf entering the show. Yeah tasha was a corny character, thats why they killed her off,to get her off the show. But I think if they gave her[denice crosby]better scrips to work with, she would have been a great character for the show. The lines they wrote for her would have made a seasoned actress look bad!!

Actually, they didn't kill her off b/c she wasn't doing well. It was b/c she wanted off.
She was so excited that she got on, and everything, but as the 1st season progressed she wasn't impressed with the roles they gave her. She was always only on the bridge doing nothing. That's not what she expected her to be doing. So she asked to leave the show and they killed her off.(except for the 2 or 3 episodes that were focused on her that she mentioned)
Source: Star Trek: The Magazine
They had interviewed her and I thought it was interesting.

Tasha Left the show. She thought that she was now famouse enough and wanted to persue other roles. And we all know that didnt go far lol.
I think that with her character there should have been more depth. I know it was the 1st season and everything and they didnt have time to go into too much in detail but in the 6th TNG episode Tasha menshions an experience on her home planet where she was a young girl being chased by a local rape gang. And she just openly says it on the bridge to data i think it was. I mean i wanna know more about this history. But what she said in that episode probly didnt even take up 1 minute. I would have liked to have seen it like someone comes onboard sometime that bring up bad memories or something that made her thing of her past then she gets all upset etc etc maybe asks for some time off from her duties and then we get the full story whilst idk, data visits her in her quarters and she has a heart to heart with him. But unfortunatly that never happened so oh well.
I still think Season 1 TNG was great though. Better that Voyager Season 1 but no as good as TOS Season 1

i think the first season is dull compared to other seasons on tng but if i didnt compare it to other seasons i wouldnt really call it dull, there are some epics which are... but there are always some in every season.

After having seen many of the later episodes and then very recently watching some of the first season episodes, I realized how much this show has progressed and grown into the best ST series. It was horrible and overly dramatic in the first season - too much like the Original series.

Agreed. The first episodes even includes many shots of Data expressing occasional emotions and using a few contractions.
