PostThu Apr 14, 2005 5:16 pm    Indians Charged for Burying Children Alive

Quote:
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Indian police have charged 80 people for burying children alive in an ancient Hindu ceremony known as "the festival of pits."

The ceremony, in which children -- some less than a year old -- are buried alive briefly and then dug up, happened on Monday in southern Tamil Nadu state, The Asian Age reported on Thursday.

Authorities have been trying for years to stop it and people found guilty face up to three years in jail and or a fine of 5000 rupees ($114).

Every two years, parents who have vowed to bury their first-born if they are blessed with a child, take part in the Kuzhimattru Thiru Vizha ceremony.

The children are drugged to make them unconscious and placed in shallow "graves" in temple courtyards. The pits are covered with leaves and dirt and the children are pulled out after Hindu priests chant a brief prayer -- lasting up to a minute.

I dont see it that way. It's a different culture, we have no right to judge them based on our own.

My question is how long has the ritual been in their culture and the infant mortality rate if any?

It's inhumane. It used to be part of a culture to sacrifice children, doesn't mean it's right. Putting a childs life at risk because they've always done so? Not.

From the impression I get, the children aren't actually killed, however, that still does not change the gruesomeness of it.

I disagree with this, but there probably isn't that high a mortality rate. Little children can survive for 15+ minutes sometimes without taking a breathe. Still, it's how ever many kids too much.

What about psychological damage? And if anyone says that being buried alive for even just a minute wouldn't cause terror in a child...

This is a religous thing for them. And their parents probably went through it to. Its probably just part of their "religous circle of life" and who are we to judge anothers religion?

The kids are unconscious and as such probably none the wiser for their ordeal.

doesn't make it any less dangerous of course.

I will, of course, refer you to this statement at a later date.

"Oh, it's their religion", good reason when we don't really have any opinion on the matter. But try to use that excuse about something you care about. Yeah, exactly.

And how do they get unconscious?

You have to stop looking at other cultures based on what you were raised on. Some people see baptising as evil because you dunk the baby into water. This is basically the same thing.

I read that, Link. I was hoping for more detail. Should've made myself clear, I guess.

*Goes to read every topic about homosexuality at STV. Sees the duplicity of these current comments.* Sad that you all can't, really.

even if they are only left underground for a minute or two.. That is still child abuse. Drugging your kid is bad to begin with, But to stick them below the dirt for ANY REASON is just, sad. It goes to show you how screwed up religions can be.

What are you basing that on? Do you know their religion and why they do this? Do you understand the significance this is in their lives?

This practice only happens every five or so years according to some sources. Only prepubesant females are allowed, but there is no age restriction on males.

As an Athropologist, well, partial anthropologist I'm still in college, I've been taught to see things from an emic point of view, looking at things without comparing our culture to it.

Children buried for minutes during festival of pits
Thursday, April 14 2005 12:21 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Madurai: As part of a medieval ritual to propitiate the village deities, 28 children were buried in pits for a few minutes in a temple during the recent 'Kuzhimatru' festival in Virudhnagar district.

Police said 28 children in the age group of three to thirteen were made to squat in pits bowing their heads before the deity of the temple at the Mariamman temple in Ayyanapuram on April 11.

The pits were covered with wooden planks and tin sheets and the children were made to sit in the pits for two to three minutes, police said. The children were later taken out alive.

Following the incident, a case has been filed against some unidentified persons for 'burying' the children.

The case was registered following a complaint lodged by the Melarajakularaman Village Administrative Officer, police said.

The burying of children in pits is a 400 year-old ritual, which is conducted during Kuzhimatru (festival of pits).

A similar incident took place last year when devotees were buried in pits for a few minutes at a temple at Kottaipatti in Elayirampannai, police said.

^ Uhh, basing this on what I believe in. I don't care if other countries think it is ok to bury their kids. lol.

Any religion that says to sacrafice your child, or bury them as an act for sacraficing them... is pretty twisted. You can think whatever you want, and have an open mind about religion. But I'm not. I normaly do, But this just seems idiotic. I just want to burst out laughing at them because what in the world can be going through thier minds?? Burrieng their kid is going to make their lives better?

God told Abraham to take Issac to a mountain and sacrafice him....

I guess that is why I'm not a religious person. It all seems like a bunch of mambo jambo to me.

Yes, Kitey, but was he sacrificed? No.

Even from a view of pure logic, especially from a logical view, it's not right.
