it would be one hell of a project

i dont know, theyre not as far fetched as youd image. 1000 gigabytes is a gigaquad! and voice recognition software is available, as well as interface! - so maybe just maybe not to unreal after all!

1000 gigabytes is a terrabyte...Gigaquad is probably 1000 terrabytes.
But holy crap, to make a computer system like that...you would need to make the computer learn every single english combination, and then be able to translate millions of other languages into english. It's just not right!
And on top of all that, it would have to control hundreds of stations simulatneously, maintain forcefields, store information and utilize it on replicator combinations, maintain the inertial dampeners...and probably hundreds of other things.
..Wow.
I hardly believe we will have a computer system THAT advanced in only 200-300 years...that is a GIGANTIC step....although, only 40-50 years ago...Mark III (I believe was the first computer) came out...I believe it used vaccuum tubes.
I guess it's possible.

When you look at how fast computers are advancing nowadays, it probably isn't all that far-fetched to have gigaquad computers as early as 100 years from now.

The Computer has a huge memory, and controls pretty much anything. Anyway, it must constantly be improved and upgraded to meet the demands.

I would like to correct myself here. I looked it up...and I believe that a gigaquad is a ficticious figure unique to Star Trek.
1000 (or rather 1024) Gigabytes is a Terabyte
1024 Terabytes is a Petabyte
1024 Petabytes is an Exobyte
1024 Exobytes is a Zettabyte
1024 Zettabytes is a Yottabyte
There is no common name for 1024 Yottabytes
A Yottabyte would be a septillion bytes...
The above is thanks to: http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/
For those of you who do not know what septillion is here is something for you to think about:
One Million is 1000 Thousands.
One Billion is 1000 Millions.
One Trillion is 1000 Billions.
One Quadrillion is 1000 Trillions.
One Quintillion is 1000 Quadrillions.
One Hextillion is 1000 Quintillions.
One Septillion is 1000 Hextillions.
(I thought that it was Sextillion, not Hexillion...but whatever, thats what this encyclopedia thing said, so I'm going with Hexillion).
Thats:
1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
If bill gates had lets say...$20,000,000,000, he would only have 2,000,000,000,000 Pennies.
The amount of pennies Bill Gates owns:
2,000,000,000,000
as compared to...
1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
For another example...lets figure out how many seconds there have been since the creation of Earth (estimated to be about 6 billion years).
6,000,000,000 years x 365 days/year x 24 hours/day x 60 minutes/hour x 60 seconds/minute = 189,216,000,000,000,000.
189,216,000,000,000,000
as compared to...
1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
Think about it.

If you haven't already, check out the book "The Computers of Star Trek"
A wonderful book.
Technically, what it states is that our computers are currently more advanced (in the sense of data retrieval and uploading) than the ones on Star Trek.
